Be Good To Yourself: Switch to Unbleached Paper Cooking and Baking Products

Over the last year, we've tried to become more eco-friendly at the acraftygourmet.com headquarters, aka our house. I donated all of my non-stick Caphalon pots and pans, which I purchased while working at Williams-Sonoma and replaced them with enamel and cast-iron items from Le CreusetLe Creuset is know for not containing harmful chemicals like PFOA, a known carcinogen. According to Dr. Mercola, studies have shown that non-stick cookware heated to temperatures as low at 446 degrees, will release toxins into the air. I found that especially scary since I cook daily. I also got rid of all of my aluminum cookware, because aluminum has been shown to be a causal factor of Alzheimer's disease, which I have a high genetic predisposition for according to 23andme.com. Finally, I also stopped using aluminum foil and plastic wrap in the kitchen.

As part of my move away from foil, I switched to unbleached parchment paper. The reason I chose unbleached parchment paper is two-fold. First, it is much better for the environment. The process of bleaching paper products releases dioxins and chlorines into the air. Most European paper companies have moved away from the traditional process of bleaching, but many US companies still continue to practice it. But even the newer and improved method is still very harmful since it releases chloroform, a known carcinogen. Using unbleached paper products is also much better for the family and home. When using unbleached parchment paper, there are no harmful chemicals leaching into your food, tea, or coffee.

I've partnered with Beyond Gourmet to introduce my readers to their line of unbleached cooking and baking products. I am giving away 2 boxes of unbleached coffee filters, a box of unbleached baking cups, a box of mini unbleached baking cups, a package of unbleached cheese cloth, and one box of unbleached parchment paper.

To be entered into the contest, you must like A Crafty Gourmet on Facebook and then please comment below letting me know how you would use these products in your home. Contest will end on September 30th and a winner will be announced on October 1st. Good Luck! Also don't forget to enter my The Spice House contest.

  1. I'm so happy to have found out about these products and only use unbleached in the home. The only thing that frustrates me about the IFYOUCARE brand of unbleached parchment paper is that the box has no cutting mechanism. Does this one?

  2. I tried to see if it does, but couldn't tell. Beyond Gourmet is much smaller than IFYOUCARE and their products are made in Sweden.

  3. I would love to try these, never even heard about unbleached paper products. I bake a lot so baking cups and parchment paper would be put to good use. Would like to see if baking cups can stand up to zucchini quiche muffins and not get soggy. I also make my own almond milk to cheese cloth is good too. No coffee for me but people in the office would appreciate :)

    1. Good Luck! I think making homemade almond milk is a great idea! Definitely drop the filters off at the office or you can do an art project with them.

  4. I'm happy to have found out about these products, too! I already Liked your fb page when I entered your Spice House contest. :) I would use the parchment paper for pouch-cooking, especially the salmon I eat 3x/week (for which I've been using... foil! *cringe*) My husband is still a coffee drinker, thus the coffee filters, and he and I make fruitcakes at holiday time and wrap them in cheesecloth while soaking them, so we'd definitely use that, as well. The baking cups and mini-baking cups I'd pass along to my daughters while teaching them about aluminum and foil (especially since my dad, their grandpa, has Alzheimer's). They often make muffins and cupcakes for our grandsons, so this prize will help 3 generations! Thanks again for the great info. Lynne

  5. What a wonderful giveaway!! I use parchment paper & muffin tin liners all the time!! I recently purchased some unbleached muffin liners and was surprised at how great they were!! They worked much better than the other kind. I would love to try the parchment paper!! It is up to us as consumers to demand the manufactures quit bleaching our cooking paper products. I cant wait to try using the parchment paper to bake with!! Thanks for the review and info!!

  6. I have recently started making my own cheese and have been looking for a good cheesecloth. Sounds like this could be a winner! I make all my own sausage, bread and pasta! I'm educating our grandchildren in the benefits of natural products. This would be a great addition!!
